TV gardening legend Alan Titchmarsh: ‘I don’t want to retire’

There is one aspect of his fame he does find hard to handle – criticism.

“I’m better than I was though and nowadays take it to heart for a shorter length of time.

“I’m sensitive by nature, which helps me as a writer, but you need a thicker skin in my other world of TV.

“I’m lucky I’ve found a group of folk who appreciate what I do but it still hurts if you do something and it’s a disappointment,” he says.

Fatherly love

While he still finds it “scary and rather shocking” that he’s lived longer than his father (“You automatically assume your father will be senior to you forever”) he’s happy that he was able to witness his success.

“He loved seeing me get on and that’s a big comfort. I’m very content and still happy to cope with the unpredictability of not knowing what’s around the next corner.

“I still feel like someone in their mid-40s,” he says.

Relentlessly cheerful

“I’m often accused of being relentlessly cheerful, and in company, I am because why would you burden other folk with your problems?

“Anyway, I’ve got no reason to be grumpy, and if I occasionally am, I’ll give myself a talking to. I’ve been incredibly lucky and never expected the life I have.

“Even now I expect someone to come up and say, ‘Who are you and what the hell are you doing here?’.

“I think it’s helped that I’ve always said ‘yes’ to opportunities, and I’ve never thought the world owed me a living. Gardening’s opened so many doors for me and I think it can benefit everyone by keeping us grounded – no pun intended.

“When I’m at home, our garden’s my special retreat.”

TV builder Tommy Walsh arrested after row with men ‘urinating in a neighbour’s garden’

“Officers attended and found a man in his 30s suffering from an ear injury following an altercation with two men. He was taken to hospital for a check-up but was not seriously injured.

“One man aged in his 50s was later arrested on suspicion of ABH (actual bodily harm) and taken to a local police station for questioning.

“He has since been bailed to a date in mid-March. Inquiries are ongoing.”

Walsh told The Mail on Sunday: “I saw them as I was coming home and I said, that’s bang out of order. It’s disgusting. My neighbour’s kids play in that garden.”

He said the men “came out into the street at me aggressively”.

Walsh explained: “I felt threatened and there was an altercation. It was just handbags and pulling shirts and things, nothing really.

“It was over really quickly – no punching or kicking or anything. Afterwards one of the guys was bleeding a bit so I brought him into my house and got him a plaster for his ear.

“He was all apologetic at first but then he started to get aggressive again so I ushered him out of the door.”

Walsh said that 20 minutes later, the police arrived to arrest him as the man had complained.

“I couldn’t believe it. I thought it was a joke,” he said.

He added: “The police were very polite and understanding but they have procedures to follow. But you can’t have people urinating in front gardens – it’s immoral. There is a public loo in the park 250 yards away.”

Meaning of net worth: Net worth is the value of all assets, minus the total of all liabilities. In other words, net worth is what you own minus what you owe. Assets include cash and investments, real estate, cars and anything else of value.

Calculating net worth: The most basic equation is subtracting your liabilities (everything you owe/debts) from your assets (everything you own). Your net worth is the amount by which your assets exceed any liabilities, and it’s an accurate reflection of your financial health.

Alan Titchmarsh: Chelsea Flower Show is the ‘height of horticultural excellence’

TV’s Alan Titchmarsh has praised the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for giving interest in gardening a “shot in the arm” after a number of key sponsors pulled out of this year’s event.

Blaming the drop on the EU referendum, he said he was confident that support for the show would return to normal next year.

Backers reportedly fell by almost half this year following the 2016 Brexit vote, with M&G Investments leading sponsorship this year.

Alan told the Press Association at the event’s press day on Monday: “It reflects the fact that, when everybody was booking for Chelsea last year, it was when Brexit happened and everybody got a bit nervous, but I think next year it’s going to get back to normal.

“People are careful when they are not quite sure, but this event gives gardening and horticultural a great shot in the arm every year.

“Gardening will survive anything. It will be the last thing to go so we need to keep growing things and we need to cheer ourselves up.”

The writer and presenter, 68, has been a familiar face on television screens for more than 30 years, first covering the Chelsea Flower Show for the BBC in 1983.

Alan Titchmarsh (Daniel Leal-Olivas/PA)

But several decades on, he says the famous annual event still shows him something new every year.

“It surprises me every time,” he said. “You see new plants, as well as things you forgot you used to know, everywhere you look. It is the height of horticultural excellence.

“I meet old friends and, as I’m a plants man, it is basically a big shopping spree.

“But next year, I would like to see garden design moving forward.

“Plant-breeding now is at such a sophisticated level that we are always assured of new and exciting varieties to freshen up our gardens.”

Chris Evans and Mary Berry (Victoria Jones/PA)

His comments came as he visited the Hillier Nurseries Memory Tree. An active campaigner for promoting gardening in schools, he continued: “There’s a great positivity in gardening that you don’t get from anything else.

“We need to make sure children are still connected to things that grow so that they don’t spend their entire time indoors on a tablet.”

Monday’s London event was attended by TV cook Mary Berry, who joined BBC Radio 2′s Chris Evans to open the pair’s vegetable-packed Taste Garden, one of the station’s five Feel Good gardens celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Joan Collins (Victoria Jones/PA)

Absolutely Fabulous duo Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders also made an appearance, as well as Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey Bussell and actors Hugh Bonneville, Joan Collins, Samantha Bond and Peter Kay.

The key displays at this year’s show include a Chengdu Silk Road Garden, with huge multi-coloured sculptural fins representing a Chinese mountain range, and a Bermuda Triangle exhibit with an “erupting” volcano.

Giant Maltese limestone pillars are a feature of the M&G Garden, which will also include some unusual plants unique to Malta.
