Producing masses of rich purple flowers in spring, this aubreta looks fab when allowed to tumble over the edge of a raised bed or provide ambling ground cover through an alpine bed. Flourishing in moderately fertile, well-drained, neutral or alkaline soil, this is an especially free-flowering variety.
  • Garden care:In a cold frame or unheated greenhouse, surface sow the seeds onto trays filled with good quality compost and water well. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin out and pot on individually. Once well established, harden off and plant them out in a sunny spot, allowing 30cm between each. Cutting the plants back hard after they have finished flowering will help keep them bushy – and may encourage a second flush of flowers.

Buying Alpines from Jacksons Nurseries

At Jacksons Nurseries we lightly trim back our alpines after flowering to ensure that the plants remain neat and tidy whilst in the pot. The more tender the plant the less we cut back to help protect exposed stems from winter frost. Depending on the plant variety we will then prune back further in spring once the risk of the more severe frosts is over.

As a result, depending on the time of year you buy alpines, they may not look like images showing their ‘prime time’ in flower and looking at their best.
