Introduction and background to the Friends’ group

The ‘Friends of Fletcher Moss Park and Parsonage Gardens’ group was formed in early 2006. At the time it was realised that parks and gardens needed some degree of ‘protection’ – from developers, from easy cuts to funding, and, in some cases, from damage and neglect. We also wanted to create a sense of ‘ownership’ of the park by local people and by many others from further afield who loved and valued the Fletcher Moss area – its Gardens, Stenner Woods and Millgate Fields, its beauty and tranquillity.
Since its formation the Friends’ group has worked closely with the City Council and with the Mersey Valley Warden Service to establish priorities for the maintenance and enhancement of the park, to provide volunteers for work where it is needed, and to raise funds for projects by applications to grant-awarding bodies. These efforts have produced significant results: the Alpine House behind the Old Parsonage has been completely transformed – what was once derelict has now one of the best collection of alpines in the north of England; safety rails and signposts have improved the area in and around the rockery gardens; noticeboards have been erected at the Visitor Centre and in Parsonage Gardens; plants and trees of many varieties have been introduced throughout the park; and a Local Nature Reserve with a Nature Trail has been established in Stenner Woods and Millgate Fields.
Regular activities include a Volunteering session every Tuesday morning in Parsonage Gardens, a second Volunteering session every Wednesday afternoon at Fletcher Moss Park, and a Health Walk every Monday afternoon from the Visitor Centre at The Croft, Fletcher Moss (see further details in the ‘Activities’ section).

(Note: Fletcher Moss Park and Parsonage Gardens are open every day of the year from dawn to dusk. Entrance is free. Dog restrictions apply in some signed areas.)
We are keen to have as much local input as possible, not only in our walks and volunteering, but in any matters connected with the management of the park and in its future. Our Committee meetings are held once every three months and we have an Annual General Meeting in late spring. All these meetings are open to any members of the Friends’ group. If you have any views or questions about the park and its facilities you could also contact us by e-mail. We have a strong and supportive membership and we warmly invite you to become a member of the group if you care about the park and gardens; as a member you will receive a Newsletter every quarter and know that you are contributing to the well-being of this precious area.

BBC One Show gardener to open our garden!

Christine Walkden, celeb gardener, set to open St Clare Hospice garden!

St Clare Hospice’s 23rd annual Open Gardens weekend has been given a boost by BBC One Show gardener Christine Walkden, who has lent her green-fingered hands to the cause. Christine, who is a Patron of St Clare Hospice, will be officially opening our own garden to the public for the two-day horticultural event.

The ever-popular gardening event was founded in 1994 by a group of St Clare supporters in Harlow, led by Anne Gould. Held every year in June, the event offers the perfect opportunity for lovers of all things flora and fauna to explore some of the best-kept green spaces in our catchment area. The 2017 Open Gardens weekend is being held on 24 and 25 June and more than 20 gardens across Uttlesford and Harlow will be opening to the public in aid of St Clare.

New for 2017, we will be opening the gates of the hospice’s own garden and welcoming members of the public. Christine Walkden will be officially launching the Open Gardens weekend on Saturday 24 June at the hospice in Hastingwood.

Christine Walkden, who is best known as the resident gardening expert on the BBC’s The One Show said: “One of the things our patients and visitors tell us again and again when they come to St Clare is how much they appreciate having access to the Hospice’s beautifully maintained grounds. The St Clare gardens are an oasis of calm and offer a secluded haven for our patients and their families to spend quality time together and make memories they will always treasure.”

Christine continued: “I am delighted to be officially launching St Clare’s Open Gardens weekend and it is a pleasure to be able to welcome members of the public into the hospice’s own garden this year. It is wonderful to share this hidden-gem with the community around St Clare – rather than keeping it concealed behind the hedges. We are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful corners of Essex and as a passionate horticulturalist I can’t think of a better way to help raise vital funds for our local hospice than by visiting the magnificent gardens of the St Clare catchment area.”

The 2017 Open Gardens weekend is being held on 24 and 25 June at venues around Uttlesford and Harlow.

Christine Walkden will be attending the opening of the hospice garden from 10.00-11.00am on Saturday 24 June at St Clare Hospice, Hastingwood Road, Hastingwood, Essex, CM17 9JX.

Entry to all the participating gardens is by brochure only. They cost £5 each and contain all the details and locations of the gardens that will be open over the weekend.

Brochures will be on sale from the end of March from St Clare Community Fundraiser Dani De’ath on 01279 773738 or [email protected]
