Outstanding Qualities

Leucojum aestivum ‘Gravetye Giant’ is a bulbous perennial with erect, strap-shaped, glossy dark-green leaves to 16 inches. In spring, leafless stems that are up to 36 inches in height bear up to 8 bell-shaped, slightly chocolate scented, white flowers. Gravetye Giant is a standout of this genus because of its vigor. It is more robust, taller and a heavier bloomer. Its common name, summer Snowflake is a misnomer because it blooms in spring and by summer it has gone dormant and is just a memory. This plant is a great naturalizer and looks good with other spring ephemerals such as tulips and daffodils. It is also a good choice for planting between later-season perennials.
