Priory Park in Great Malvern

About

Formerly the gardens of the Priory Mansion built in 1874 which is now used as the Council House, Priory Park provides a tranquil centre to Great Malvern being bordered by the Malvern Theatres, Malvern Splash Leisure Complex and the Council House. Priory Park was previously known as the Winter Gardens in times past.

Priory Park is filled with beautiful mature trees and surrounds a large duck pond spanned by a couple of bridges. A Victorian bandstand, built in 1875 and restored in the 1980s, proudly stands in the park and hosts free Sunday afternoon concerts during the summer months.

Many of the trees in the park were planted about 150 years ago when it was fashionable to plant as many exotic trees as possible from other parts of the world in your garden.

A children’s playground occupies one corner of the park next to a beautiful wooden carving, created by Tom Harvey from a tree which had to be felled.

Priory Park can be accessed from Grange Road next to the Malvern Theatres or if coming by car, park in the Priory Road car parks and walk up by the Malvern Splash. Priory Park is on the ‘Route to the Hills’ from Great Malvern Station.

Free parking still available at Malvern’s Waitrose despite changes

DRIVERS have been reassured that they will still be able to park for free at a supermarket car park if they want to visit other shops or the theatre.

The introduction of new cameras at the car park at Malvern’s Waitrose branch offers had sparked worries that a three-hour free period would come to an end.

Concerns included if car parking would still still freely available to residents, especially in the evening, despite the introduction of Automatic Numberplate Recognition (ANPR).

Councillor Beverley Nielsen spoke with store manager James Alldridge, who clarified that the terms and conditions of the car park have not changed and that the car park is open, free-of-charge for up to three hours, with no return for two hours following use.

People are also able to use the Waitrose car park anytime after 6pm throughout the evening.

In the case of parking before 6pm, residents do run the risk of triggering an automatic parking charge of £70 if they remain there for longer than the maximum three hour period.

Cllr Nielsen said: “I am very pleased to see that Waitrose Malvern are keen to support our wider retail and leisure economy and are aware of how important their car parking is for residents and visitors alike.

“It’s essential that this vital facility continues to serve our community providing access to our town centre, our shops, local businesses, restaurants and world-famous Malvern Theatres, helping to ensure they continue to thrive for the benefit of everyone here, including Waitrose.”

More spaces in Malvern as parking changes approved

EXTRA car parking spaces will be created in the town centre as part of new measures designed to support Malvern’s economy.

Councillors from Malvern Hills District Council’s executive committee gave the proposals the green light at a meeting last Tuesday.

Changes being introduced include making the Council House car park on Avenue Road open to the public 24/7, instead of just after 7.30pm as it currently stands.

As part of the arrangement, Brunel House will no longer be available as a public car park.

However, the changes overall will mean 33 additional spaces will be available to visitors and shoppers.

On top of that another ten spaces are being made available in Priory Road South through redesign of the layout.

The £1.50 evening charge will also begin two hours earlier, starting at 4pm and running until 8am the next morning to help support the night-time economy.

It currently runs from 6pm to midnight.

The option to pay for just one hour’s parking in all of the council’s long stay car parks will also be removed.

Changes to the Council House car park are to set to be introduced next Monday with changes in the remaining car parks affected introduced from Friday, November 6.

Coun Bronwen Behan, portfolio holder for environment on Malvern Hills District Council, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve not only been able to keep parking charges on hold but increase the number of spaces available and provide a more attractive pricing offer to make it easier for people visiting our towns for a night out.

“Not only will this help support our local economy but it represents a good deal for the council taxpayer as well.”

District councillors had already backed a recommendation there was no case to increase parking charges at a meeting in June, meaning the Malvern Hills would continue to offer the lowest parking prices in Worcestershire.

Executive committee members also supported lobbying Worcestershire County Council for improvements to disabled and coach parking and on-street parking regulations in Great Malvern to make them easier to understand.

As well as supporting Malvern’s economy, it is hoped the changes will help generate an extra £70,000 a year for the council to support efforts to fill a £1.45million gap in its budget by 2021/2022 as a result of government funding cuts.

Plans to make New Street Car Park in Upton a short stay car park and explore the use of controls at Malvern Vale Community Centre Car Park to stop unauthorised use were not put forward for approval.

This followed feedback from the public during a 12 week consultation.

DISCLAIMER: The driving directions on this site are provided, via an Application Program Interface (API), by Here.com. These directions are for planning purposes only. You may find that construction projects, traffic, weather, or other events may cause conditions to differ from the map results, and you should plan your route accordingly. You must obey all signs or notices regarding your route.

All automated route planning methods such as GPS and Web based systems have similar limitations. While they tend to be reasonably reliable in navigating from one cultural feature to another (between cities, towns, schools, hospitals, airports, etc.), they are less reliable in extremely rural and wilderness settings. In these situations, all automated route plans should be viewed with skepticism regardless of their source. See: “Outdoor Navigation With GPS” published by Wilderness Press.
